Minoxidil is one of the best known preparations associated with hair loss. This article explains what it is, how it is used and what is worth knowing about it. It is not a recommendation to use it and it does not replace a conversation with a doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n

Where it came from<\/h2>\n

Minoxidil was originally developed as a tablet medicine for high blood pressure. During its use it was noticed that some patients experienced increased hair growth. That observation led to the development of preparations applied locally to the scalp.<\/p>\n

Today, topical minoxidil is one of the few hair preparations with a long history of clinical use.<\/p>\n

How it is thought to work<\/h2>\n

The mechanism has not been fully explained. The prevailing account is that minoxidil widens the blood vessels in the scalp and affects the length of the phases of the hair cycle, extending the growth phase. Other interpretations exist, but none of them is complete.<\/p>\n

For practical use, something else matters more: minoxidil works while it is being used. Stopping means a return to the state that would exist without it, usually over the course of a few months.<\/p>\n

Strengths and forms<\/h2>\n

Two concentrations for topical use are most commonly found, two percent and five percent. The preparations come as a solution or as a foam.<\/p>\n

The choice of strength and form is not a matter of personal impression: it depends on sex, the condition of the scalp and the manufacturer’s instructions. In the EU these preparations are dispensed in pharmacies, and information about which form suits whom should come from a pharmacist or doctor, not from the internet.<\/p>\n

What to know before starting<\/h2>\n

It takes a long time.<\/strong> The instructions speak of months of regular use before the situation can be assessed at all. Judging the result after a few weeks makes no sense.<\/p>\n

Increased shedding at the start.<\/strong> Some users experience increased shedding in the first weeks. This is a known phenomenon linked to the synchronisation of the hair cycle and is usually temporary, but it can be alarming and become a reason for stopping too early.<\/p>\n

Side effects.<\/strong> The most commonly reported are dryness, itching and irritation of the scalp. Part of this is attributed to the propylene glycol in solutions, which is why some people tolerate the foam better. There are also more serious side effects listed in the patient information leaflet, and the leaflet is read before use.<\/p>\n

It is not for everyone.<\/strong> There are conditions and therapies with which minoxidil is not recommended. That is a reason to consult a doctor before starting, especially if you take medicines for the heart or blood pressure.<\/p>\n

What minoxidil does not do<\/h2>\n

It does not affect the cause of hereditary hair thinning. In androgenetic alopecia<\/a> the cause is the sensitivity of the follicle to dihydrotestosterone, and minoxidil does not act on that. We wrote about this in the article Androgenetic alopecia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It does not help with every type of hair loss. In scarring alopecia, where the follicle has been permanently replaced by connective tissue, there is nothing left to activate. What else is used for scalp care<\/h2>\n

Alongside preparations that count as medicines, there is a broad group of cosmetic products for scalp care: serums, ampoules and lotions. They belong to a different category, with different rules and different expectations.<\/p>\n

A cosmetic product is not an alternative to a medicine and should not be seen as one. What cosmetics do is care for the scalp and the appearance of the hair, and that is the frame in which they make sense. In short<\/h2>\n

Minoxidil is a preparation with a long history of use, clear instructions and known side effects. It works while it is used, it asks for patience and it is not for everyone. The decision about using it is made by a doctor or pharmacist together with you, based on your situation, not by an article on the internet.<\/p>\n
